Apa yang Dimaksudkan: Versi Grice
Pembahasan konsep
teoretis istilah “apa yang dikatakan” (what
is said) dan “apa yang dimaksudkan” (what
is meant) berkaitan secara langsung dengan sejumlah konsep teoretis dalam
istilah “kalimat” (sentence) dengan
“tuturan” (utterance) dan “arti
kalimat” (sentence meaning) dengan
“maksud penutur” (speaker’s meaning).
Konsep-konsep teoretis tersebut secara langsung juga berkaitan dengan
permasalahan objek kajian antara semantik dengan pragmatik tentang meaning. Secara umum kajian semantik
tentang meaning dikaitkan dengan
konsep teoretis “apa yang dikatakan”, “kalimat”, dan “arti kalimat”. Sementara
itu, kajian pragmatik tentang meaning
dikaitkan dengan konsep teoretis “apa yang dimaksudkan”, “tuturan”, dan “maksud
penutur”. Oleh karena itu, pembahasan konsep-konsep teoretis tentang meaning dalam teori pragmatik tidak
dapat dipisahkan dari pembahasan konsep-konsep teoretis tentang meaning dalam teori semantik yang telah
dibahas pada bagian C.1. (hal. 95).
Pembedaan antara istilah
“apa yang dikatakan” dengan istilah “apa yang dimaksudkan” pertama kali diajukan
oleh Grice (1975/1996). Grice menganalisis meaning
dengan membandingkan nosi yang terdapat dalam verba say ‘mengatakan’ di satu sisi dan verba implicate ‘mengimpli-kasikan’ di sisi lain yang di dalamnya
mengandung pengertian ‘apa yang diimplikasikan’, ‘apa yang disarankan’, atau
‘apa yang dimaksudkan’. Pembahasan meaning
oleh Grice ini tidak dapat dilepaskan dari pembahasan Grice sebelumnya
tentang pengertian meaning (1957/1996).
Grice membedakan meaning menjadi natural-meaning dan non-natural-meaning.
Meaning yang dipertukarkan dalam
sebuah komunikasi dengan menggunakan bahasa diklasifikasikan oleh Grice sebagai
non-natural- meaning atau yang biasa
disebut dengan meaningNN.
Menurut Grice, mengetahui arti suatu ekspresi lingual yang dikatakan oleh seseorang
belumlah cukup kecuali juga mengetahui maksud (intention) yang ingin disampaikan oleh seorang penutur. “Maksud”
adalah ‘sesuatu yang ingin disampaikan oleh penutur dengan mengatakan suatu
ekspresi lingual’.
Penjelasan Grice tentang
meaning tersebut menunjukkan
pentingnya kedudukan “maksud penutur” dalam permasalahan meaning. Terdapat dua hal yang harus dibedakan untuk memahami
permasalahan meaning. Kedua hal
tersebut adalah (i) fakta ekspresi lingual yang dihasilkan oleh seorang penutur
dan (ii) maksud penutur dengan ekspresi yang dihasilkannya tersebut. Yang
pertama itulah yang kemudian diidentifikasi sebagai “apa yang dikatakan” dan
yang kedua adalah “apa yang dimaksudkan”. “Apa yang dikatakan”, menurut Grice
(1975/1996:158), adalah ‘“what someone has
said to be closely related to the conventional meaning of the words (the
sentence) he has uttered”. Contohnya adalah satu ekspresi lingual (12) yang
dituturkan oleh seseorang.

orang yang membangun kota ini.
Tanpa disertai konteks tuturannya, penutur
bahasa Indonesia dapat mengetahui bahwa yang dikatakan dalam (12) mengenai
‘seseorang (mungkin laki-laki atau perempuan) yang dikatakan sebagai orang yang
melakukan pembangunan sebuah kota yang dekat dengan penutur kalimat itu’.
Pengetahuan penutur seperti inilah yang diidentifikasi oleh Grice sebagai
pengertian dari “apa yang dikatakan’.
Sementara itu, “apa yang
diimplikasikan” adalah ‘maksud penutur dengan apa yang dikatakannya tersebut’.
Ada kalanya “apa yang dimaksudkan” oleh penutur adalah sama dengan “apa yang
dikatakan”. Maksud penutur (12) adalah sama persis dengan arti literal atau
konvensional setiap satuan lingual dalam (12). Grice menyebut “maksud penutur”
yang seperti ini sebagai “implikatur konvensional” (conventional implicature). Bagaimana jika “apa yang dimaksud-kan”
tidak sama dengan apa yang dikatakannya? Jika “apa yang dimaksudkan” penutur
berbeda dari apa yang dikatakannya, Grice menyebutnya sebagai “implikatur
non-konvensional” (non-conventional
implicature) dan inilah yang menjadi perhatiannya. Grice (1975/1996:158)
menyatakan bahwa salah satu jenis “implikatur non-konvensional” adalah
“implikatur percakapan” (conversational
implicature) sebagaimana dikatakannya bahwa “I wish to represent a certain subclass of nonconventional implicatures,
which I shall call conversational implicatures”. Secara keseluruhan

Pengertian gagasan Grice
dengan istilah “apa yang dikatakan” perlu dicermati lebih mendalam. Grice
(1957/1996:88) mengatakan bahwa
for x to have meantNN
anything, not merely must it have been “uttered” with the intention of inducing
a certain belief but also the utterer must have intended an “audience” to
recognize the intention behind the utterance.
Berdasarkan pernyataan Grice tersebut, tampak
jelas bahwa “apa yang dikatakan” merupakan bagian dari “maksud penutur” karena
tidak akan ada “maksud penutur” kecuali dituturkan. Namun, di sisi lain Grice
memiliki pandangan bahwa “apa yang dikatakan” berkaitan dengan arti literal
satuan-satuan lingual penyusun tuturannya. Ini menunjukkan bahwa istilah “apa
yang dikatakan” itu dipahami oleh Grice dalam nosi pragmatik. Dengan kata lain,
apa yang dikatakan berada pada tataran tuturan bukan sebagaimana dipahami oleh
Semantik Minimalis berada pada tataran kalimat. “Apa yang dikatakan” – berdasarkan pernyataan
Grice di atas – merupakan ‘satu ekspresi lingual yang dituturkan sedemikian
adanya sesuai dengan maksud yang dikomunikasikan, sehingga pendengar dapat
memahami maksud penutur dengan tuturannya tersebut’.
Karena “apa yang
dikatakan” merupakan bagian dari “maksud penutur”, maka pandangan Grice dengan
“apa yang katakan” menghadapi permasalahan. Permasalahan tersebut muncul ketika
“apa yang dikatakan” tidak dapat dikaitkan dengan arti literal satuan-satuan
lingual penyusun tuturannya seperti pada tuturan metaforis. Permasa-lahan
tersebut memaksa Grice untuk membuat pembedaan antara mengatakan (saying) dengan pura-pura mengatakan (making
as if to say). Ketika “apa yang dikatakan” tidak dapat diartikan secara
literal, Grice mengatakan bahwa penutur
berpura-pura mengatakan “apa yang dikatakan” agar “apa yang dikatakan”
tidak melanggar maksim kuantitas dalam Prinsip Kerjasama. Ini tentu saja
menimbulkan permasalahan dan banyak dikritik oleh baik semantisi maupun
